Goalkeeper movement has been one of the most controversial mechanics in FC 26, and criticism reached a breaking point when a poll on EA SPORTS FC’s official Discord showed that half of all participants strongly disliked it. More than fifteen thousand players voted, and fifty percent selected strongly dislike, which made it clear that the feature was not landing as intended. The mechanic lets players manually control the keeper in one versus one situations, and many felt it created unrealistic defensive advantages.

Community pressure leads to confirmed changes

Following the wave of feedback, EA has now announced that a nerf to manual goalkeeper movement is on the way. EA confirmed that goalkeeper repositioning will be slower and less reactive once the update arrives. The announcement explains that keepers will no longer be able to cover multiple shot angles inside the same animation window, which has been one of the community’s biggest complaints.

The studio also noted that it aims to reduce situations where keepers appear to shift too quickly across the goalmouth or adjust instantly to finesse and driven shots. These problems have been highlighted repeatedly by both casual players and competitive players throughout the first months of FC 26.

What EA plans to change in the gameplay update

  • Slower manual GK movement speed
  • Reduced responsiveness during shot windups
  • Shortened window for assisted keeper lunges
  • More punishing outcomes when over committing to one side

EA has not yet provided a release date for the update, so the impact on the Weekend League meta remains unknown. Players are now waiting to see how strongly these adjustments will affect finishing, defensive tactics, and the overall balance in one versus one situations once the gameplay patch goes live.
