EA Sports has quietly made one of the most significant gameplay adjustments ahead of FC26, and it could completely change how players build their Ultimate Team squads. The Accelerate system, which decides how fast a player moves depending on their strength, agility, and height, has been reworked. This update might mean that what was considered “meta” in FC25 will not be the same in FC26.
What is Accelerate in FC26
The Accelerate system was first added in FIFA 23 to make players feel more realistic in-game. Instead of everyone running the same way, EA split players into three acceleration types:
- Explosive: small, fast players like Vinícius Jr. or Ousmane Dembélé
- Controlled: balanced players with similar agility and strength
- Lengthy: taller, stronger players like Erling Haaland or Viktor Gyökeres
In FC25, Lengthy was usually the favored option because it made tall attackers extremely quick in straight-line sprints. However, in FC26 the formulas for these categories have been adjusted, and height has become a much bigger factor.
Changes to Accelerate types in FC26
EA has simplified Accelerate types back to just three options: Explosive, Controlled, and Lengthy. But the requirements for each type are stricter.
- Explosive: agility must be 10 points higher than strength, acceleration 80+, agility 65+, and height under 182 cm for men or 162 cm for women.
- Lengthy: strength must be 4 points higher than agility, strength 65+, acceleration 40+, and height at least 183 cm for men or 164 cm for women.
- Controlled: if a player does not meet either Explosive or Lengthy requirements, they default to Controlled.
This means far fewer players are Explosive in FC26, while many more are Lengthy. For example, Son Heung-min, who used to be Explosive with chemistry styles in FC25, is now too tall at 183 cm. Similarly, women’s players like Sophia Smith are affected by the new cutoffs.
Who benefits from the changes
Looking through the early ratings database, several players now benefit from being Lengthy. Haaland remains one of the most famous Lengthy strikers, but he is joined by others like Victor Osimhen, William Saliba, Lucy Bronze, Ada Hegerberg and Khadija “Bunny” Shaw. Women’s footballers being able to qualify as Lengthy for the first time is also a notable change.
Explosive players are far rarer this year. Only elite attackers such as Kylian Mbappé, Mohamed Salah, Dembélé, Vinícius Jr., and Florian Wirtz fall into the Explosive category. This rarity might actually make Explosive players extremely valuable in gameplay and possibly in the transfer market.
What this means for Ultimate Team
EA is also changing how players start their Ultimate Team in FC26. Instead of choosing a nation for the starter pack, users will now select a league, with six men’s and women’s league combinations to choose from. Many players are expected to pick the Premier League or La Liga, though choosing Serie A or NWSL could be a smart move for SBC flexibility early on.
With Explosive players harder to find, squad building strategies could shift dramatically. Having just one Explosive winger might feel like a cheat code against the many Lengthy defenders. At the same time, the ease of creating Lengthy players means power strikers could dominate once again if EA does not balance the system further after release.
