EA finally dropped the pitch notes for the next patch, and it is going to fundamentally change how we build our midfields. We are getting a major adjustment to how passing attributes interact with playstyles. For months, you basically needed the Tiki Taka playstyle on your central players if you wanted to string together quick passes under pressure. If your striker lacked it, their build-up play felt incredibly sluggish. This update changes that dynamic completely.
Tiki Taka gets nerfed, while base ground passing receives a major buff
EA has buffed the accuracy and speed of standard ground passing across the board. The impact is specifically noticeable on cards with high base passing stats. We are moving away from playstyle reliance and back to a system where attributes actually matter. Players without the Incisive Pass playstyle, but with high passing numbers, can now hit contextually curved through balls. This means you can finally use high-rated playmakers who were previously ignored just because they lacked the right badges.
Because base passing is now significantly better, EA decided to nerf the Tiki Taka playstyle to keep things balanced. The before-and-after footage provided in the pitch notes shows a shocking difference. One-touch passing with Tiki Taka is visibly slower and less perfectly glued to the receiver than before. It will still be a useful trait, but it is no longer a strict requirement to play through the middle. You might see the market value of pure Tiki Taka cards drop as the community realizes they can just rely on high passing attributes instead.
Double-tap lofted passes are finally getting balanced
If you play Rivals at a high level, you know exactly how frustrating the lofted pass meta has been. The double-tap pass has been the easiest way to bypass defensive lines inside the 18-yard box. It felt completely unguardable at times, allowing attackers to dink the ball over center backs with perfect precision.
EA has directly addressed this by reducing the accuracy of lofted passes. You will now need the Inventive playstyle to execute them effectively. Even then, EA explicitly stated that double-tap passes with the Inventive playstyle plus will still be slightly less accurate than they were before the patch. You can review the original discussion on these patch notes directly in the source video. This is a massive nerf to a very specific attacking abuse tactic. We will have to find new ways to break down low blocks, likely relying more on the newly buffed ground passing and through balls. For anyone who heavily relied on the double-tap to score cutbacks, this patch is going to require a serious adjustment to your muscle memory.
Power shots and chip shots are back on the menu
Shooting is also getting tweaked, which might be the most exciting part of this entire update. Power shots have been borderline useless for most of the FC 26 cycle because the wind-up animation takes too long and the accuracy is completely unpredictable, often sailing wide even with perfect aim. The update improves both the trajectory and the overall accuracy of power shots.
We have already seen the transfer market react to this news. Cards with the Power Shot plus trait, like Donyell Malen, spiked from 193,000 coins to nearly 230,000 coins purely on speculation. We definitely need to test the actual speed of the animation in-game before we commit heavily to buying these cards, but the potential is there for a highly effective new scoring method from outside the box.
Chip shots are also getting a buff. They are now less likely to go wide and have better overall accuracy. It is classic EA timing to drop this fix right after most of us completed the objective requiring chip-shot goals, but we will take the improvement anyway. If goalkeepers continue to rush out aggressively, having a reliable chip shot will be a massive advantage in weekend league.
Skill move speed boosts and market implications
Skillers have a reason to celebrate as well. The update increases the execution speed of several specific moves by exactly five percent. This includes the fake shot, heel chop, feint, and exit. Five percent might not sound like a massive number on a spreadsheet, but when you watch the frame-by-frame comparison footage, the increased snap on the heel chop is very noticeable.
That split-second difference in animation speed is all you need to beat a manual defender inside the penalty area. Players with five-star skill moves are going to feel much more responsive when chaining these specific animations together.
As for the market, we suggest staying entirely liquid until we actually feel the patch in-game. Do not rush out to buy Power Shot cards or panic-sell your Tiki Taka players just yet. The meta will undoubtedly shift, but until we play a few games and see how the passing actually feels, any big investments are purely a gamble. Fodder prices are high right now, so focus on selling off your 85 to 88 rated cards and hoarding coins for when the dust settles. You really want to have maximum buying power once the best tactics are established post-patch.
How the passing overhaul impacts defensive structures
With ground passes moving faster and finding their targets more accurately, defensive AI is going to be tested in entirely new ways. Throughout FC 26, defensive auto blocks have been incredibly strong because passes often lacked the zip needed to thread the needle. If players with high vision and short passing stats can now zip the ball past defenders before they can react, we might see a shift away from high-pressure tactics.
You will need to manually cut passing lanes much more effectively now. Relying on the AI to step up and intercept slow passes will get you punished by anyone using top-tier playmakers. This places a higher premium on center-backs and defensive midfielders with the Intercept playstyle, as they will be the only ones capable of reacting quickly enough to the newly buffed through balls. It is a welcome change that rewards high-IQ defensive positioning over pure AI reliance. We can finally expect our Kevin De Bruyne and Martin Ødegaard cards to perform like actual elite playmakers rather than just guys who happen to have decent dribbling.
