How to score penalties in FC 27

  1. Check who is taking it. If the player on the ball is not your best finisher, press R2 (RT) to pick another taker before the run up.
  2. Pick a corner before the whistle and stick to it. Changing your mind mid run up is how penalties end up wide.
  3. Aim with the left stick, but do not push it all the way to the edge. Full stick aims for the very edge of the post, and that is where misses come from.
  4. Hold shoot for power. Too little and the keeper gets a hand to it, too much and it rises over the bar. A firm, medium strike into the side netting is the safe choice.
  5. Keep the stick still while your player strikes the ball. A late flick moves the aim at the worst moment.

Which penalty to use

  • Normal shot (โ—‹ / B): your default. Power plus a corner beats most keepers.
  • Finesse (R1 + โ—‹ / RB + B): more placement, less pace. Good with players who have high Curve and Finishing.
  • Chip (L1 + โ—‹ / LB + B): the Panenka style. Only down the middle and only when you expect the keeper to dive early, because a saved chip looks very silly.

Who should take your penalties

Two attributes decide most of it: Penalties, which covers the spot kick itself, and Composure, which helps when the pressure is on. Put your player with the best combination of the two on spot kicks, and keep a second taker in mind for shootouts.

  • Look at Penalties first, then Composure, then Finishing.
  • A striker with a high overall but low Penalties is a worse choice than a midfielder with high Penalties.
  • In a shootout, put your five best takers first. Do not save the best one for last; the game may be over before you get there.

How to save penalties in FC 27

  • Move along the line with the left stick before the kick to make one side look bigger. Small steps, not a sprint to the post.
  • Dive with the right stick in the direction you guess. Up and left or right goes for the top corners, flat left or right goes low.
  • Do not dive too early. If you commit before the taker strikes the ball, a calm player will just roll it the other way.
  • Read habits. Most players have a favourite side. After two or three penalties in a shootout, the pattern usually shows.
  • Stay central against a chip. If an opponent has chipped one already, staying put on the next is a fair gamble.

Common mistakes

  • Full stick into the corner. It feels safe and it is the most common way to miss the target.
  • Too much power. Holding shoot too long sends it over. Less is more from the spot.
  • Letting the game pick the taker. Press R2 (RT) and choose your best player.
  • Chipping every penalty. It works once. After that the keeper stays in the middle.
  • Same corner every time. Human opponents notice. Mix it up in a shootout.
