Happy New Year, FC community! EA Sports has just dropped the first major Pitch Notes of 2026, and Title Update 1.4.0 looks set to shake up the meta just in time for the Team of the Year warm-up.
While updates usually bring a laundry list of bug fixes, this one strikes right at the heart of gameplay frustrations we’ve seen over the holidays: overpowered AI defending and the passivity of Squad Battles.
Here is everything you need to know about the update arriving in the coming days.
Major Gameplay Change: AI Defending Nerf
The headline change in TU 1.4.0 is a direct response to community feedback regarding “auto-defending.” EA has announced a reduction in the reaction times of AI defenders when marking the ball carrier.
What this means for you: Previously, the AI was often too quick to shut down passing lanes or tackle without user input, making it difficult to break down congested defenses. With this update, AI defenders will be slower to react, creating more open space during transitions. Expect your attacks to feel more free-flowing and manual defending to become a much more valuable skill gap.
“Lengthy” AcceleRATE Update
It wouldn’t be a Title Update without a tweak to acceleration types. EA is refining the height thresholds for the Lengthy run type, effectively buffing taller players.
- Men’s Players: Minimum height for Lengthy is now 185 cm.
- Women’s Players: Minimum height for Lengthy is now 165 cm.
The other requirements (Strength min 65, Acceleration min 40, Strength – Agility >= 4) remain the same. This change means a wider pool of players will now qualify for the Lengthy archetype, potentially bringing some “clunky” but strong strikers back into the meta.
Other Key Gameplay Adjustments
- Squad Battles CPU Buff: If you’ve been bored to tears by the CPU holding possession passively in Squad Battles, good news. The CPU AI has been tuned to be more proactive and attacking, meaning less time chasing shadows and faster match completion.
- Goal Line Clearances: Defenders positioned on the goal line can now make automatic clearances in last-ditch situations where human reaction time isn’t fast enough.
- Strength Matters: Shoulder challenges are being reworked. If there is a large Strength attribute difference, the weaker player is more likely to stumble. Stronger players will also be better at shielding.
- Acrobatic Nerf: Bicycle kicks and acrobatic shots performed right after a flick-up have had their accuracy reduced further.
Ultimate Team & Mode Updates
New Release Hub A new “New Release Hub” is being added to Ultimate Team. This will serve as a central dashboard to track the latest campaigns, SBCs, and Objectives without digging through menus. Note: This feature will go live via a server release a few weeks after the patch.

Career Mode & Clubs In Career Mode, managers will now see expanded player status info (Contract vs. General happiness). Plus, contract durations for ICONs and Heroes have been extended to 3 years. For Clubs players, EA has fixed visual bugs regarding Acceleration Types in the Team Management screen.
PC Specifics
For our PC players, EA has addressed the annoying bug where the refresh rate would unintentionally lock to 60Hz, as well as framerate drops occurring in the second half of matches.
Title Update 1.4.0 is expected to deploy on all platforms within the next few days.
